OET Writing Correction for Filipino Doctors
Filipino doctors are one of the largest international medical graduate (IMG) cohorts in the world, with strong representation in the UK NHS, the US (via ECFMG), Australia (via AHPRA), and the Gulf states. OET is the most efficient English pathway for most of these destinations, and Writing is consistently the bottleneck sub-test. Our corrections address the specific patterns that hold Filipino IMGs back from Grade B.
- GMC UK, ECFMG USA, AHPRA Australia and Gulf pathways all supported
- Purpose-first openings and SOAP-removal — the two highest-yield fixes for Filipino IMGs

OET writing challenges specific to Filipino doctors
Filipino medical graduates write OET in fluent English drawn from English-medium medical training. The most common patterns we see in their letters are: long history-first openings before reaching the purpose, comprehensive past medical history regardless of relevance to the referral, and a tendency to use US-style chart abbreviations (PMH, HPC, ROS, SOAP) inside the letter prose. Each is fixable with targeted feedback.

Corrections identify the exact patterns that hold doctors back from Grade B.
"Filipino IMG letters are clinically strong. The English itself is rarely the problem — what costs marks is reader-driven selection: deciding what to leave out, where to place the differential, and how to compress comprehensive history into reader-relevant prose."
The 6 areas your letter is assessed against
Your letter is marked across six criteria by trained examiners. Our corrections assess every criterion and explain precisely where you are losing marks.
Purpose & Content
Has the right information been selected for the specific reader? This is the criterion where most marks are lost.
Conciseness & Clarity
Is information presented efficiently without unnecessary detail? Brevity and precision are rewarded equally.
Genre & Text Organisation
Does the letter follow the expected professional structure — opening, body, and closing — used in clinical correspondence?
Vocabulary
Is clinical and professional vocabulary used accurately and appropriately for the reader and context?
Grammar
Are grammar structures used correctly and with appropriate complexity for formal professional writing?
Spelling & Punctuation
Are spelling and punctuation accurate throughout? Errors here signal a lack of proofreading to examiners.

What OET score do Filipino doctors need for the GMC?
The GMC requires Grade B (350) in each of the four OET sub-tests for IMG doctors, including Filipino candidates. Score combining across two sittings within six months is allowed.
Is OET accepted by ECFMG for Filipino doctors?
Yes. ECFMG accepts OET Medicine results for the English proficiency requirement, including for Filipino IMGs working toward USMLE certification and US licensure. The single-sitting rule applies.
What is the most common OET writing error for Filipino doctors?
History-first openings that delay the purpose statement, and SOAP-style abbreviations imported into letter prose. Both are easily fixed once identified, and both reliably move Purpose and Genre & Style scores up a band.
Student Success
"I was opening every letter with full history. Three corrections later I was writing purpose-first and the difference in feedback was night and day. Passed on the second sitting."
