IELTS Academic Writing: Two Tasks, Four Criteria

IELTS Academic Writing consists of two tasks completed in 60 minutes. Each task is assessed against four criteria. Understanding these criteria is essential for targeted improvement.

Task 1: Data Description

Describe, summarise, or explain visual information such as graphs, charts, tables, diagrams, or maps. You must write at least 150 words in approximately 20 minutes.

  • Identify key trends, patterns, and significant data points
  • Organise information logically with clear paragraphing
  • Use appropriate comparison and contrast language
  • Avoid personal opinions or speculation beyond the data

Task 2: Essay

Write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem. You must write at least 250 words in approximately 40 minutes. Task 2 contributes twice as much to your Writing band score as Task 1.

  • Present a clear position or argument throughout
  • Support ideas with relevant examples and reasoning
  • Structure the essay with introduction, body, and conclusion
  • Demonstrate range in vocabulary and grammar

The Four IELTS Writing Assessment Criteria

Your IELTS Writing band score is the average of four equally weighted criteria. Our correction feedback addresses each one individually so you know exactly where to focus.

Task Achievement / Task Response

For Task 1: Have you adequately described the data and highlighted key features? For Task 2: Have you fully addressed all parts of the question with a clear, well-developed position? This criterion checks whether you actually answered the question asked.

Coherence and Cohesion

Is your writing logically organised? Do ideas flow naturally between sentences and paragraphs? Are linking words used effectively without overuse? Is paragraphing clear and purposeful?

Lexical Resource

Do you use a sufficient range of vocabulary? Is word choice precise and appropriate? Can you paraphrase effectively? Are there spelling errors? Higher band scores require less common vocabulary used naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Do you use a variety of sentence structures? Are complex sentences formed correctly? How frequent are grammar errors, and do they impede understanding? Band 7+ requires a mix of simple and complex structures with good control.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer IELTS writing correction as well as OET?
Yes. The Writing Correction Service provides expert feedback for both OET and IELTS writing tasks. Our teachers are experienced in both assessment frameworks and provide feedback aligned with the relevant marking criteria.
How does IELTS writing assessment differ from OET?
IELTS Academic Writing has two tasks: Task 1 (describing visual data in 150+ words) and Task 2 (an essay of 250+ words). Assessment uses four criteria: Task Achievement/Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. OET has a single letter-writing task assessed on six healthcare-specific criteria.
Which is easier for healthcare professionals, IELTS or OET?
Most healthcare professionals find OET easier because the content is clinically familiar. However, OET has stricter requirements for professional tone and clinical judgement. The best choice depends on your target registration body's requirements and your individual strengths.
What IELTS writing score do I need for healthcare registration?
Requirements vary by country and regulatory body. Common benchmarks include an overall Band 7.0 with no sub-score below 6.5 for nursing in Australia, and an overall Band 7.0 with at least 6.5 in Writing for the UK NMC. Always check your specific regulatory body's current requirements.
