IELTS Academic Writing: Two Tasks, Four Criteria
IELTS Academic Writing consists of two tasks completed in 60 minutes. Each task is assessed against four criteria. Understanding these criteria is essential for targeted improvement.
Task 1: Data Description
Describe, summarise, or explain visual information such as graphs, charts, tables, diagrams, or maps. You must write at least 150 words in approximately 20 minutes.
- Identify key trends, patterns, and significant data points
- Organise information logically with clear paragraphing
- Use appropriate comparison and contrast language
- Avoid personal opinions or speculation beyond the data
Task 2: Essay
Write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem. You must write at least 250 words in approximately 40 minutes. Task 2 contributes twice as much to your Writing band score as Task 1.
- Present a clear position or argument throughout
- Support ideas with relevant examples and reasoning
- Structure the essay with introduction, body, and conclusion
- Demonstrate range in vocabulary and grammar
The Four IELTS Writing Assessment Criteria
Your IELTS Writing band score is the average of four equally weighted criteria. Our correction feedback addresses each one individually so you know exactly where to focus.
Task Achievement / Task Response
For Task 1: Have you adequately described the data and highlighted key features? For Task 2: Have you fully addressed all parts of the question with a clear, well-developed position? This criterion checks whether you actually answered the question asked.
Coherence and Cohesion
Is your writing logically organised? Do ideas flow naturally between sentences and paragraphs? Are linking words used effectively without overuse? Is paragraphing clear and purposeful?
Lexical Resource
Do you use a sufficient range of vocabulary? Is word choice precise and appropriate? Can you paraphrase effectively? Are there spelling errors? Higher band scores require less common vocabulary used naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
Do you use a variety of sentence structures? Are complex sentences formed correctly? How frequent are grammar errors, and do they impede understanding? Band 7+ requires a mix of simple and complex structures with good control.

IELTS vs OET: Key Differences for Healthcare Professionals
If you are a healthcare professional choosing between IELTS and OET, understanding the differences will help you decide which exam plays to your strengths.
Many regulatory bodies accept both IELTS and OET. According to the UK NMC, the required IELTS score is Band 7.0 overall with at least 6.5 in Writing, while the equivalent OET requirement is Grade B. AHPRA (Australia) requires Band 7.0 overall with no sub-score below 7.0, or OET Grade B in all sub-tests.
